Job Description

Position: Archaeologist

Status: Full time, permanent

Location: Ohio History Center, Columbus OH

Salary: $47,840 - 52,000 per year

Summary:

The Archaeologist provides support in protecting and documenting the underground cultural resources across the Ohio History Connection site network. The role will assist the Archaeology Projects Program Manager in completing archaeological fieldwork, lab work, GIS work, and report writing. The role is responsible for independently conducting archaeological surveys and lab work related to site projects. Additional responsibilities include creating and manipulating GIS data, uploading data to ArcGIS, and creating project maps in support of site documentation, project planning, fieldwork, and report writing.

Essential Functions:
  • Conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork including shovel testing, unit excavations, block excavations, pedestrian surveys, construction monitoring, feature and artifact identification and analysis, and mapping.
  • Perform processing and cataloging of collections recovered during projects, including washing, cataloging, and artifact analysis.
  • Conduct resource photography and mapping in the field, including GPS data collection.
  • Maintain and provide GIS data that is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Contribute to technical reports of the results of archaeological fieldwork.
  • Conduct research and literature reviews.
  • Prepare site forms.
  • Frequent in-state travel, potentially overnight for extended periods of time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of archaeological field, lab, and/or GIS experience in a CRM, academic, or museum setting.
  • Experience in Mid-west (Ohio preferred) pre-contact and post-contact archaeology.
  • Working experience with ESRI ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Survey123.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and Adobe Acrobat.

Desired Skills & Experience
  • Knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including NHPA and NAGPRA.
  • A demonstrated ability to document excavations clearly and professionally.
  • Knowledge of and experience with artifact identification, cataloging, and analysis.
  • Sound GIS dataset management skills.
  • Experience conducting archival research and background record reviews.
  • A demonstrated ability to write clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders and colleagues with differing perspective on archaeological practices.
