In our Middle School, you’ll teach and learn alongside ninety other faculty who embody the same intellectual curiosity, wholesome intensity, and creative spirit as our students. As part of a Professional Learning Community, you’ll meet in teams to design lessons, create assessments, share ideas, and innovate for the future. The Interim Middle School Band Assistant Director is responsible for providing support and instruction for Westminster’s Middle School Band Program in alignment with National Music Standards and Westminster’s philosophy and strategic goals. While this position requires a well-rounded band director, ideal candidates will have particular expertise in single-reed instruments. The Assistant Director will lead excellence in student musicianship while maintaining a climate that encourages student engagement, participation, exploration, and creativity. Supervisor : Head of Middle School Supervisory Responsibilities : None Position Status : Salaried, exempt, full-time, Interim Interim Period: Commencing on or about January 6, 2025, and concluding May 22, 2025 Hours of Work : Typical hours are 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend or evening work may be required. Requirements And Qualifications The requirements below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a successful candidate. Relevant undergraduate degree; advanced degree preferred Demonstrated success teaching and conducting middle school band with a particular focus on beginning band Proficiency in teaching and playing single-reed instruments Familiarity with national trends in music education, including curriculum planning, interdisciplinary studies, and assessment initiatives Previous professional performance experience is preferred Essential Responsibilities Serves as a classroom instructor for Middle School Band Classes, collaborating with the MS Band Director to develop solid foundational skills through small group instruction, individual coaching, and conducting small and large ensembles as needed. Supervises extracurricular ensembles, such as Jazz Band, as determined by the Director of Performing Arts Interfaces with the Director of Performing Arts regularly Serves as an Instrument Specialist for Middle School Band Classes, collaborating with MS Band Directors to develop solid foundational skills through individual coaching and conducting small and large ensembles Supports MS Band Director in the creation of lesson plans, course materials, and instructional resources that support students' diverse learning needs and abilities Works with the Director of the Middle School Band to manage administrative duties, including but not limited to music library organization, instrument inventory, facility and equipment logistics, concert and event production, clinician team scheduling, and registration for GMEA Events Serves as a liaison between the school and the parents, relaying important information and updates Periodically co-plans concerts, field trips, and surrounding events Periodically coordinates parent volunteers for Band events Serves as a member of the Middle School Faculty, participating in standard MS responsibilities, including Homeroom, MayATL, and extracurricular activities Works directly with other Middle School teachers as part of a Professional Learning Community Perform other duties as assigned Additionally, Successful Candidates Should Demonstrate a love of working with Middle School students an engaging teaching style the ability to create and promote an inclusive learning environment the ability to build partnerships with colleagues

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out; and smell. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become CPR, AED, and First Aid Certified is required. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may frequently walk on slippery or uneven surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is often loud. Westminster is a drug-free, smoke/vape-free campus.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the regular business day. Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required and is associated mainly with planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities. Driving a Westminster vehicle may be required for this position.
