Summary: The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) provides care for animals whose owners are experiencing financial challenges and could not otherwise afford medical care for their cats and dogs. Additionally, we provide life-saving care for animal victims of cruelty and neglect who come to us through our internal partners (Adoption Center, Kitten Nursery, Community Medicine, and Community Engagement teams) and through our external partners (New York Police Department and other NYC organizations). The AAH Internship Program provides excellent practical experience with a high caseload and strong mentorship from veterinarians who have dedicated their careers to this life changing work. AAH interns participate in core rotations in the hospital, such as internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, and emergency. The emergency rotation is a combination of appointment-based emergencies with emergency procedures. Interns have the hands-on opportunity to perform procedures, such as stabilizing and unblocking cats with urinary obstructions, wound treatments, splint changes, aural hematoma repair, and esophagostomy tube placement. In addition to core rotations, our interns train in dentistry to arm them with day one ready dental skills as well as general soft tissue surgery. Interns also rotate through our Community Medicine high volume/ high quality spay and neuter clinic, and master techniques developed by the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (formerly known as Humane Alliance). The AAH Internship Program offers unique and specialized rotations in medical care of animal cruelty victims (anti-cruelty rotation) and veterinary forensic medicine. The ASPCA anti-cruelty veterinary medical team provides daily care for animal victims of cruelty in a shelter facility. The ASPCA NYC forensic veterinarians have a combined total of 55 years of veterinary practice and 29 years of work in veterinary forensic medicine. The forensic veterinary and anti-cruelty veterinary medical teams work together to gather evidence for criminal prosecution of animal cruelty cases and to provide necessary medical care for health and behavior rehabilitation. This position has a competitive salary, $80K, medical and dental insurance, 56 hours paid personal/vacation time, and 56 hours sick time. Additional benefits include: $1200 in debt relief, and NY State and DEA license reimbursement, VIN membership and scrubs. Responsibilities: Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ​ AAH (65%): Provide high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of outpatients and inpatients; skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of outpatients and hospitalized animals within hospital medical parameters and budgetary guidelines Perform general procedures and treatments Assist staff doctors and surgeons with surgery and dentals Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients Practice in compliance with Fear Free guidelines ARC (20%): Primary case responsibility for animals involved in cruelty and neglect cases Perform medical intake exams and initial diagnostics Attend daily rounds and make treatment plans for short and long-term care as well as euthanasia decisions Foster rechecks as needed Forensics (5%): Assist forensic science veterinarians with evidence gathering either on-scene or from office Assist in generating forensic reports to be used in anti-cruelty cases Assist in necropsies as needed Adoption Center (5%): Oversee admission of new patients to the ASPCA Adoption Center and kitten nursery Primary case responsibility for dogs and cats in the Adoption Center Recommend treatment plans, provide inpatient care, and oversee drop offs for procedures and diagnostics to AAH Community Medicine (5%) Primary case responsibility for animals presenting in the community veterinary centers Provide high-quality, spectrum-of-care medicine to a wide range of outpatients Perform high quality/high volume spay neuter Qualifications: Ability to successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced emergency practice and effectively multi-task without loss of attention to detail Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively and courteously with all levels of staff including Veterinary Technicians and Client Service Representatives Exemplifies the ASPCA’s Core Values: Has Commitment and dedication to improving the lives of animals Demonstrates Ownership and feels responsible for outcomes Believes in Team – that we are stronger together Seeks to Elevate others and reimagine what is possible Focuses on Impact, specifically making change for animals Education and Work Experience: Must be able to obtain a New York State veterinarian license within 60 days of hire date If you have any questions about your eligibility to receive a NYS license in time for the start of the internship, please contact the NYS Department of Education ( Only applicants from AVMA accredited veterinary schools will be considered.
