Job Summary

Our Ski Instructors serve as professional representatives of Bear Valley Mountain Resort.

You will be a member of an interdependent team dedicated to creating the best possible environment for taking and teaching a ski lesson. Not only will instructors work with students, but also with guests and other employees. .

Job Duties and Responsibilities

This job description is intended as a summary of the primary responsibilities of and the qualifications for the position.   • Teach lessons from beginners through to advanced students ranging in age from 4 and up
  • Display patience and good communication skills while teaching
  • Teach a variety of age groups with professionalism
  • Perform work in other departments before/after lessons begin (POS, Rentals, Lift Ops, etc.)
  • Attend teaching/ability clinics when available
  • Adhere to all Bear Valley Mountain policies and procedures
  • Be a positive role model for all students, while representing the ski resort in a professional manner
  • Model behavior consistent with the company Code of Conduct
  • Set goals and a plan for self-improvement and continual education, PSIA model
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings
  • Assist with on mountain special events when available
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Competencies

  • Level 1 PSIA/AASI certification a plus
  • Ability to interact with guests on a professional level
  • Work in extreme winter weather conditions
  • Must provide own ski equipment
  • Must be an intermediate to advanced skier or snowboarder
  • Positive, flexible and enthusiastic attitude
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Thrives in a challenging work environment
  • Proven ability to work with a minimum of supervision, think quickly and take initiative to address problems in a creative manner that contributes to the team effort and guest experience
  • Ability and desire to learn and strive for the highest teaching standards
  • Knowledge and practice of The Code, as developed through NSAA

Work Schedules

Weather, snow conditions and the number of guests play a large role in the work scheduling of Bear Valley employees.

When conditions are normal, you may be expected to work 40 up to 48 hours per week, including weekends and holidays. During busy periods – especially the holiday periods in December and the months of January and February – you may be expected to work six (6) days a week.

You must arrange for transportation to work so that you arrive at your designated workstation at the scheduled time. Keep in mind that you will often be required to drive on hilly, snowpacked, and icy road.

Working Conditions

At any time during the ski season, Bear Valley employees are often required to perform their tasks in high winds, heavy snowfalls, low visibility, rain, and extremely cold or warm temperatures.

Uniforms

A professional appearance at Bear Valley is required. Please wear your name tag and uniform at all times during your scheduled shift. We will provide most of the uniform for you to do your job. This uniform is for work hours ONLY, no exceptions.

You will be required to provide some items as part of your job.

The quality, color, and style of the items must be approved by your manager prior to being worn to work. All hats worn must have the Bear Valley logo while on shift.

The skiing/riding employee represents a model for safe skiing for both the guest and fellow employees. You are required to be aware of all safe skiing procedures, trail closures, and out-of-bounds policies of the mountain.
