Job Description

Job Title: Special Education Director Department: District Reports to: Superintendent Start date: July 1, 2025 Closing Date: Open Until Filled TERMS/BENEFITS: 12 month position; medical, dental, vision, life benefits; 403(b); 12 sick days and 32 vacation days; preschool/child care discounts; mandatory participation in Arizona State Retirement System. SUMMARY: Responsible for overall management, compliance and representation of the Special Education Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Represent the district in all matters concerning special education at school sites, within the community, with agencies and organizations, with Arizona Department of Education. Responsible for district compliance with all federal and state mandates. Ensure that due process procedures are followed in special education matters and documentation is maintained. Serve as district 504 Compliance Officer. Participate in the ADE continuous monitoring process. Coordinates the filing of yearly reports as requested by ADE and other state or federal entities. Supervise and direct all special education staff, including but not limited to special education teachers, paraprofessionals, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, board certified behavioral analysts and social workers. Provides technical assistance in areas such as assessment, curriculum development, use of materials and equipment, and management of student behavior. Assist the Human Resources Department with ensuring Highly Qualified mandates are met for all special education hires. Assists in the recruitment, hiring, and placement of SPED staff. Ensure a positive environment for staff, students, and parents. Perform other duties as assigned. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in Education Leadership or Special Education or combination of equivalent education, experience, and training as approved by the Superintendent. Extensive experience working with students with special needs as well as special education administration. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must hold a valid Arizona certificate or appropriate state licensing in an area of special education or approved related service (Speech/Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Pre-K Special Education).
