Position Overview
The Senior Manager of R&D and Packaging will lead comprehensive material innovation initiatives across Home division including Hard Goods, Soft Goods, and Packaging. This role drives long-range strategic development, and new categories launches by identifying innovative materials, finishes, and techniques. This position combines creative initiatives, Operational excellence & technical expertise to advance product elevation while maintaining brand standards across all Home categories.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Innovation & Material Development
• Lead innovation strategy for all Home categories including textiles, hard goods, and packaging materials, ensuring alignment with Ralph Lauren's heritage of quality and craftsmanship
• Drive alignment and prioritization of material development initiatives across Design, Merchandising and Product Management teams to ensure cohesive execution of innovation roadmap
• Create and manage dedicated workstreams for material innovation that extend beyond seasonal development cycles, ensuring feasibility of production, quality standards, and competitive costing
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key factories to drive innovation while optimizing costs and upholding superior quality benchmarks
• Present quarterly updates on long-range material development to Product Management, Merchandising and Design teams, including quality metrics, cost analysis and production feasibility
• Develop transition process for moving innovative materials into seasonal line plans, establishing quality control measures for scaled production
• Transform and maintain the material library into an interactive innovation hub, serving as a vital source of inspiration and reference for creative & business needs.
Packaging Operations & Creative Management
•Identify and execute strategic projects to optimize packaging costs, sourcing, and development processes through collaboration with Product Management and Packaging Operations teams.
• Drive strategic alignment between packaging initiatives and business objectives across Textiles and Tabletop & Gift categories
• Lead end-to-end development and execution of comprehensive packaging roadmap in partnership with Product Management teams across Home division
•Create Standard operational procedures where needed to improve communication and work efficiency on packaging need for all categories.
• Create and manage standardized processes for design brief intake and execution across all Home categories
• Establish approval workflows and timeline management systems to support seasonal deadlines
• Monitor and report project status to stakeholders, proactively identifying and addressing potential risks
•Work with Product management and Packaging operation on rollout of compliance updates.
• Lead team of Graphic Designers to deliver high-quality artwork that meets brand standards and business requirements
• Manage creative development process from concept through production, ensuring alignment with product strategy
• Drive quality standards across all packaging programs in partnership with Product Management
• Oversee development and review of packaging samples including photography, color corrections, and mockups
Experience, Skills & Knowledge
• 8+ years’ experience in product development and R&D, with demonstrated success in materials innovation across hard goods, soft goods, and packaging within luxury brands
• Proven track record of leading cross-functional initiatives and managing creative teams while driving operational excellence
• Strong technical expertise in manufacturing processes, production costing, and quality control across multiple product categories
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with factories while driving innovation and maintaining quality standards
• Experience implementing operational procedures and managing complex timelines across multiple workstreams
• Superior project management and communication skills with ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
