Job Description
Job Summary Performs procedures in decontamination, preparation, assembling, sterilization, storing, and distribution of medical devices and supplies for patient care. Serves customers of all ages from newborn to older adults, related to the population of individual departments. Assists in orientation and training process of new technicians. Carries out appropriate duties without immediate supervision, acts independently and accepts responsibility of contributing to the management of Sterile Processing in the absence of the Manager Sterile Processing. Makes minor decisions and refers administrative decisions, using line of authority. Achieves cross training in all areas of Sterile Processing.
Qualifications Education:
High School graduate or equivalent required. Certified Registered Central Service Technician or surgical technology training desirable.
Training:
Eight to twelve weeks of orientation.
Experience:
No experience required, but preferred.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of procedures and techniques in infection control, Standard Precautions, and preparation and processing of medical devices. Knowledge of parameters of sterilization and operation of sterilizers. Knowledge of instrumentation, including care and processing. Familiar with location of other departments in Hospital. Knowledge of established Hospital regulations, policies and procedures. Good communication skills, cooperative, considerate, and works well with others. Successful completion of skills checklist within 60 days.
Performance Requirements Responsibility For:
Preparation and processing medical devices for patient care. Maintains a clean and safe environment, utilizes supplies efficiently, and exercises care in handling of equipment. Performs computer data entry for order communications and inventory management. Performs duties pertaining to surgery workroom. Exchange and restock all crash carts, which includes transporting open medication trays to the pharmacy for exchange of sealed medication trays as a replacement. Records and documents sterilization activities. Communicates messages accurately. Works without immediate supervision. Follows line of authority for problem solving. Assists in a Quality Assessment/Performance Improvement program within the department. Attends meetings and education programs.
Physical Demands:
Stands for variable periods of time, walks on even surfaces for short distances. Pushes loaded carts, approximately 75-100 lbs. Frequently lifts items weighting 25-35 lbs. Good vision and manual dexterity required. Handles hazardous health material. Moderate stress to meet deadlines for providing medical devices and supplies. Works in warm environment in some areas.
Special Demands:
Works in close proximity with others, requiring cooperation and consideration. Mentally alert to surroundings, observant, and efficient. Good communication skills, initiative, and good judgment. Recognizes that errors in sterilization functions could cause critical and costly results to the patient and the hospital. Speaks, writes, and understands English.
