Position Summary:
Certified Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for managing the intake process for substance treatment referrals, conducting assessments, completing and timely submission of service authorization request (SAR), developing and implementing treatment goals and objectives. and facilitating group sessions. The counselor is also responsible for ensuring all documentation is collected and documented in compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations

Required Knowledge, Skills, Licensure, Training & Travel Requirements (if applicable):
Education: Must be recognized as a CSAC by the Virginia Board of Counseling. Has obtained a degree in a related field (social work, psychology, psychiatric rehabilitation, sociology, counseling, vocational rehabilitation, human services counseling) is preferred
Work experience: At least one year of experience providing direct services to individuals with a diagnosis of mental illness and/or substance abuse
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong psychosocial assessment skills. Minimal supervision regarding use of time, able to prioritize work assignments. Ability to communicate effectively with professionals and clients. Strong attention to detail. Deep understanding of counseling interventions. Information about and ability to connect clients with community resources.
Interpersonal Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret human service periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff and colleagues, clients, and the general public.
Travel Requirements: A valid VA Drivers License
Essential Job Duties
% of Time
1.
Support staff in the comprehensive assessment of clients and develop treatment plans based on the assessment. Support individual and group counseling sessions along with completing the required supporting documentation. Support case management services, as needed.
2.
Document treatment progress for each client. Exercise sound judgment in proposing changes to client treatment plans. Coordinate closely with other staff to ensure the appropriateness of treatment modalities.

Maintain high quality documentation of all case work, completed in a timely manner and consistent with outlined program policies and licensure requirements. Notify Supervisor of any significant client medical complaint(s), unusual events, accidents, medical problems, property damage or maintenance concern, etc.

Provide crisis intervention as needed. Support staff in develop and implement plans for individual client discharges
5.
Group session facilitation, Individual, group, and family therapy-under clinical supervision, Group substance use counseling-under clinical supervision, Health literacy counseling
